Can computers hold up?

I was just wondering if a bike computer(odometer etc.) can handle going downhill over rocks or could it possibly muck up the settings?

yeah they can handle it, you have to worry about the wire a little more if you're using a wired computer. i personally don't ride with one on my mtb because as soon as you go down, your computer is probably gonna get smashed. plus i find myself never having the chance to look down anyway...

The most solidly constructed computer I ever had was the old CatEye CC-8000 "ATC". Not only was it feature-packed but it was ruggedised and had a pretty heavy-duty cable as well.

If you get a good wireless like the Specialized Elite, no cable to worry about and the computer is on a breakaway mount.

I wouldn't take a computer MB riding because if i had a fall, it would probably break it. I have a cat-eye with wires, and the only thing i'm concerned about is the quality of all the new ones. So i dont risk it.

I've crashed many times with my computers and they've always held up fine. My old CC8000 once got slammed directly into a steel bar set at handlebar height which caused it to eject itself into the bushes and resulted in a half-hour long search and rescue in the middle of the night. It came out with hardly a scratch. My current computer on my MTB is the Shimano FlightDeck and it's seen its share of nasty crashes too but still keeps working.

glad to hear that they're stong, personaly i've never had a fall with it on so i wouoldn't know, but i have seen some that have got smashed. Luckly that hasn't happend to me, but i do wonder if any mechanical problems can occur. Like the screen moving out of place, or some button malfunctioning, so for protection i always take it off, down off-road tracks.

What is the screen called again? i forgot the name, is it LCD, i thought there was a different name for it.

Most (actually every) bike computers I've seen use an LCD for a display. I've never heard of it referred to as anything else.

I've got an old Vetta, probably 10+ years old. It was on the mountain bike I raced for several years, and been through many falls. The worst was in a downhill event....concusion, fractured collar bone, dislocated shoulder, several lacerations, bent frame, broken handlebars, trashed wheel, bent derailer, etc. The computer is still going strong on another bike, and the speed matches the speed showing on my other computers.

Planet Bike makes the best computer hands down. Mine has been through 5-6 trail falls/crashes, snow, rain, and drops. Works like new.

Unfortunately, they are no longer made. They were discontinued back around 1994 or so. Much of their ruggedised features did make it into the CatEye Enduro line though.
