rear hub QR axle replacement

on my '87 road bike i notice when the wheel is off the bike and i spin the axle there is a slight bend in the axle, is it necessary to replace the axle and ho much would a shimano 105 or higher quality rear axle cost?

If the axle is bent you need to check the dropout alignment - something bent the axle. It will also possbly cause uneven bearing wear after a while. You can just ask about the axle at a bike shop.

As chadwebster said a bent axle can cause uneven bearing wear, and might also be an indicator of non-parallel dropouts, but you have and can continue to live with that.

The real PIA of a bent axle it it will cause the wheel to change position every time you remove and remount it, depending on the orientation of the axle. That means you'll be fudging to center it in the brakes and chain stays, doable but nice to avoid.

Replacing axles is relatively cheap, so while it isn't urgent, it's something worth attending to.
