Tension + True? Both needed... right?
Over the years, the one thing I've not had good success with doing on my own is wheel truing. I've laced up a new wheel build, but had my LBS do the tension / true.
Ok... so, I bring in an older campy hub, mavic ma40 rim, from my back up Trek 560 Pro bike, that I just replaced some spokes on. I mention to the guy @ counter that I'd like a tension and true. He's the newest member of this LBS and hands it to the main mechanic (with whom I've had success with in the past). I watch him work for a about 5min, and he hands the wheel back to me and says 'its done. You've got a very tiny wheel hop, but nothing to be worried about.' (I did know that, and its almost not visible to the naked eye).
The question is: I did not see him tension it. All I saw was a general truing, with a spoke wrench. I did have all the spokes loosened, due to me replacing nearly all the inside spokes, from a chain that shifted to high and cut a lot of them.
Wheel seems to ride fine. Should I worry about no tensioning?
(its on my back up training bike. Only 200 miles on month gets put on it.)

No I would take it to some other bicycle shop and have them to re do it for you.Tell them what you have done and had done at another place with out telling them where no name.To me it would be better to have a good bicycle shop take care of your wheel and let them know about the very tiny wheel hop you have with it.Just a little hop can make you go crazy or it does me.

It's a problem we all face when dealing with professionals, be they bike or car mechanics or doctors. You have to be able to trust their knowledge, skill and honesty because you're not equipped to do otherwise anyway. You've had success with this same mechanic in the past so I'd accept him at his word. In any case, the wheel seems OK, though it's a bit early so far.
It's possible it had adequate tension, or that he brought up the tension as he trued it and you couldn't know from a distance. If you still have nagging doiubts you might try to sense the overall tension by massaging the spokes a bit and comparing it to another wheel. You can also spin it and test for evenness of tension by sound, but sound isn't a reliable way to compare tension between two wheels.
