Shimano 8spd to 9spd conversion?

Hi team. I have upgraded my Cannondale CAAD5 frame to ultegra groupset, leaving me with a parts bin. My wife has a tri bike with sora shifters & budget shimano 8spd cassette & derailluers. if I were to throw in my Tiagra front & 105 rear d/r & the 105 shifters, would a 9spd cassette be swappable with the existing without surgery?, Would it be a worthwhile upgrade for her?
If this is possible, I will sort the last link in my chain, the Ultegra shifters. I am in two minds as to whether it is worth the hassle swapping as the 105's seem fine but if I can upgrade my wife's without major surgery, then I will go ahead.

All you need to swap in Shimano 8 to 9 is shifters, casette and chain, assuming the 8 speed RD is not DA.Any other 9 speed stuff you want to throw at it is optional.

I'd put on new cables and housings. Everything should switch over just fine. 8 and 9 speed use the same freehub, the 9 speed cogs and cog spacing are narrower and require a narrower chain.

Hey thanks for the good advice. A new cassette & chain sounds easy. Here's hoping I get some good lovin on the back of this these tweaks.
