Cone Conundrum

So my NDS cone turned itself in until it locked my wheel during a ride (it is stripped now). Went to LBS and got new axle and cone nuts, however the nut races are not quite the same, I cannot get the feel right without there being some play. Anyone know where to find a 525 deore cone nut?

condition of the cups/races? how many balls in each side? there should be slight play in a qr hub. the play will be eliminated when the qr is clamped. the new cones really should have the same size and shape(diameter, width, curvature) as the old one.

If you need one in less than 13 days - do a google search for "Shimano Small Parts" or similar - focus on European websites. They tend to stock Shimano small parts - whereas most places US side will likely say, "that'll be 6 weeks"....if they get it right to begin with.

If I want replacement Deore M525 front axles - I have to make 'em myself...literally.

Have you tried your LBS?

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Usually there's quite a bit of forgiveness in cone shape for them to work OK. If they're fairly close analogs, I don't think the new cones are necessarilly the problem. Possibly the races are worn or damaged by the over-tight condition, maybe your axle is bent, or you might have loaded an extra ball.

Check everything you can first, before you go crazy looking for a cone that may not solve your problem anyway.

BTW- if it's basically OK but just feels a bit rough, that might be a cone quality issue, but may go away as the balls break in their wear tracks.
