smallest tire on 26" rim?
I was just wondering, what is the smallest tire one can put on a 26" Mountain Bike rim? I've heard that you can't go below 1.50", but I have a hard time believing that.

I think your rim width determines tire width limits. My narrow 26 inch wheelsets include:
--1.25 inch Specialized Fatboys on Sun SubIV rims
--1.3 inch Vredestein S-licks on Velocity Aeroheat rims
Check your rim's specs (Sun has a good website with specs on their products) or perhaps your tire's specs.

for a while I used some 1.0" Ritchey Tom Slicks. they were ok but they were a pain getting on and off the rim. (Ritchey advantage rims!) They were very light though.
one thing i did notice was that with the smaller tires on the bike it was easy to get up to speed but very difficult to keep momentum when starting up a hill. Simple physics.
I switched back to 1.5's after that experiment. I found that i preferred the extra cushioning and they didn't look as weird on the bike.

Thanks guys. I just checked the mavic website(could'nt find anything on the sun website) and for every mountain bike rim they make they give references for 1" tires. So apparently it's no problem to put 1" tires on mountain bike rims.
It probably does look funny, those little tires on those heavy forks!

Sheldon has a chart relating minimum and maximum permissible tyre dimensions to rim width. Since mountain bike rims tend to be too narrow for their intended application, narrow tyres may actually be OK.

If you put a tyre that is too narrow on a rim, it will leave the edges of the rim exposed to road damage. I did this once, and my rim got so banged-up in only 1 week, I put the old tyre back on.
