recapping a slightly frayed cable

One of the cables on my bike lost a cap on the end that keeps the strands together. The strands have begun to slightly separate. It's not bad yet, but I can;t figure out if there is a good strategy to gather all of the strands together and get them into a tight/small diameter to install a new cap?

You try and twist the 'frayed' end in the direction the cable was initially wound. That should get them back in line, if it doesn't just remove that frayed section and cap it slightly higher up the cable.

Yes try twisting them back into place unless they are bent and mangled.
A better way to manage cables is to use silver solder in the ends after applying and its still hot take a rag and wipe it. If you still want to put a cap on do so.
I silver solder before I cut cables it helps to keep the strands together and if you don't have a cable cutter you can just use a pair of cutters and it stays clean.

When putting the new cap on, twist it in the direction of the strands to keep the cap from unraveling them.
