shifting problems

Hi guys!
I recently purchased a 2011 windsor fens from bikesdirect.com. I got it 2 days ago, dad put it together, and it had no problems whatsoever. But for some reason today the front derrailleur stopped shifting to the top gear. So to solve this problem I went on youtube and looked up how to fix it. So I did everything it told me too, but then all of a sudden when i try to shift the front derrailleur it doesnt even shift anymore...the cable doesnt even move when i try to shift. If the shifter is broken, the only time it couldve broke was when i kept shifting back and forth when i was trying to tune it....which would absolutely suck. Somebody please help me!!!! i would like to get back on the road as soon as possible!!!!

Are you able to operate the derailleur manually (by hand) with the cable disconnected? The other question is, when you are trying to shift is the shifter moving but not the derailleur?

If it was working before you attempted to adjust it, you may have messed something up. You may have both limit screws too tight not allowing the derailleur to move? Really need more info.

Start from scratch here and see what happens.. https://bicycletutor.com/adjust-front-derailer/

oh yeah thats the video i was watching when I was adjusting it. I did all things. but all of a sudden when i starter to adjust the higher limit screw. when i was move the screw it look liked nothing was moving. so then id shift backwards or forwards a couple times. so i was hmmm....so i shifted back to low gear to see if anything adjusted, and the shifter cage? did move a litttle but so i re adjusted that. But when i tried to shift back into high gear it wouldnt all of a sudden. like i cant push the left shifter all the way to where it clicks. ill try unhooking the cable and se if the shifter works then

Oh dear!

Front derailleurs are MUCH more picky about adjustment than rears. There are several adjustments and each one affects the others. Once it gets screwed up, if you don't know what you're doing, there is a tendency to pile one misadjustment on top of another in an effort to get it to work right again. Jacking with the limit screws is a sure indication that's been done. Once correctly set, limit screws never need readjustment.

My advice is to start over from the very beginning. Go to the Park Tool website. find the tutorial for installing a front derailleur. Completely disconnect the shift cable and start from the very beginning as if you were installing the derailleur for the first time. Do the steps in order and don't be tempted to skip any because each adjustment affects the subsequent adjustments.
