Brake Advice

Need to know if there are any options for brake calipers on my newest build. I am working on building an All-City Big Block. All I have left is the brake calipers. On the All-City website they list a complete Big Block as having Tektro R538 calipers. I also saw these brakes on the Rivendell website referred to as "big mouth" brakes that allow for wider tires without the need to deflate them to remove the wheel.

Any other options that you can think of. I'm not opposed to the Tektros, just wondering.

the Tektro R538 calipers seem to be a Mid reach brake at 47 - 57mm reach. I think Diacompe makes something similar or maybe even a BNX brake.

Get brakes that you like and don't break the bank/budget for your bike.

High-end brands and designs make a small difference in braking, but pads make the most difference of anything else once they are adjusted and set up correctly. Make sure to match brake type/design with lever type/design. Different brakes need different lever ratios and mixing the wrong types together make for either wooden and poor brakes with little power or grabby-scary brakes with no feel.

IMHO, the types of brakes you get are less important than that they reach the rim correctly, are adjusted correctly and matched to the levers, and have high quality pads.

The rest is just "bragging rights" and looking pretty. Even cheap off-the rack department-store bike calipers can be made into massively effective brakes if you have them adjusted correctly, matched to levers that have the correct ratio, and are wearing high-quality pads.

I agree and the Tektros are only about $43

That's not a bad price -although I bet I could find something nice on Amazon for $20 or something at a bike swap for $10-15 for the pair. I guess it all depends on what you want to spend.

But those Tektros are pretty sexy looking.

Well, it's about the fit as well. And the $20 or something calipers likely would not be dual pivot models either.

Just as I thought they are cheaper over at Amazon.

Tektro R538 Road Caliper $33.78
