Income tax refund is on the way, which means I begin purchasing parts for my new build. This is the first time I've built a road bike from the ground up. I *think* I chose parts that work together, but before I pull the trigger I figured I'd double check here and see what people who actually know what they're doing have to say.

Now another question, about the FD. It says 31.8mm, but the CrossCheck frame has a clamp size of 30mm. Am I going to have to shim this? Also, rear hub suggestion. Something, obviously Campy compatible, that isn't over(or under)-built. Sealed bearings, 32-36h, skewer, preferably on the cheap/simple side as I'm just looking to build up a wheelset I can feel comfortable taking on a few short tours.

The build looks fine and I don't see any obvious issue.

As for the FD. Unless Surly us using some kind of weird off standard seat tube, I suspect it's a 1-1/4" seat tube and calls for the 31.8,mm clamp. Seat tube standards are in inches (1-1/8", 1-1/4", and 1/3/8") and there's lots of rounding when these dimensions are expressed in millimeters. If the tube is in fact an odd size it'll either take a braze-on FD, or Surly will provide a shim, since there aren't any 30mm clamp FDs made (to my knowledge).

For hubs, I suggest you keep it simple and use Campy's at the Centaur level if available, or Record, but they're pricey. There aren't too many choices otherwise that use a Campy splined freewheel body. Also, Campys are of good quality and IMO among the easiest to fieldstrip, service and adjust so they're ideal for extended touring.

If you can't source hubs at a decent price email me, I have numerous pairs in 32h.

Surly CX takes a 28.6mm FD. I don't know Campy but you will be able to buy a FD with the correct clamp size or get an oversized clamp FD that comes with shims. You will not need to invent the shims yourself.
