You will need to determine the style of hub you have and the style or brand of cog system. The table below shows several different options. FR-1 Shimano® freewheel 12 splines, approx. 23mm diameter http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR1.jpg FR-2 Older Suntour® two notched, 25mm across http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR2.jpg FR-3 Suntour® four notched, 24mm across http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR3.jpg FR-4 Atom® and Reginia® 20 splines, approx dia. 21.6mm http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR4.jpg FR-5, or FR-5G with guide pin Shimano® cassette lockring, Sun Race®, Hugi®, many brands 12 splines, approx. 23.4mm diameter http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag..._with_cste.jpg FR-6 BMX and Freestyle one-speed 4-notch freewheels- 4 notches, 40mm across http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR6.jpg FR-7 Falcon® brand freewheels- 12 splines, approx 23mm diameter http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...r_help/FR7.jpg BBT-5/FR-11Campagnolo cassette lockrings-(for Campagnolo cassettes, not freewheels) 12 splines, approx. 22.8mm diameter http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag..._help/BBT5.jpg FR-8 Compact single speed(30mm thread, "flip-flop hubs") http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...help/FR-8w.jpg There may be older model freewheels where a tool is no tool available. It may still be possible re-use the wheel but at the loss of the freewheel. There are also current models of freewheels that do not have an adequate design for removal. If the image below, the freewheel has two very narrow and shallow notches that do not allow enough purchase for a tool. Removal of this type of freewheel would likely result in ruining the tool, the freewheel, or both. For either situation, see destructive removal of freewheels http://www.parktool.com/uploads/imag...R_notool3w.jpg This model of freewheel has no removal tool fittings of any type. |
Most of those are for freewheels
|
Also, note that while the FR-1 and FR-7 are listed as the same size, the Falcon freewheel splines are just -barely- larger than the Shimano splines. This is why Park Tools makes them in different colors.

AG, great reply, there seem to be a lot of questions about casettes where the hub is actually a freehub, this should answer for them as well

One thing to be aware of, the tool used for Campy cassette lockrings is also the tool used to remove their older square taper cartridge bottom brackets so Park lists it as BBT-5 (Bottom Bracket Tool -5) as a bottom bracket tool.
Do not confuse the BBT-5 used for Campy cassette lock rings with FR-5, the tool used for Shimano and similar cassette lock rings. |
I should add that the FR-5 for cassette lockrings also works for 12 spline shimano-type freewheels. I've used my Point Tools equivalent of the FR-5 on some pretty stubborn freewheels and it did the job without sustaining damage. I thought some people may want to know this and save a couple of bucks.
