spindle length why two measurements

I am shopping for a new crankset for and old Trek 820(1992). In an effort to maintain chainline I am trying to match crankset to spindle length. Most cranksets I see list two spindle length measurements, 113,118mm for example. Why are there two measurements?

sedges, Probably a double vs. triple crankset length, the smaller for a double.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I doubt it's a double vs. triple issue since the spec. comes with the crankset.

If it's for a mountain bike, the 5mm difference is probably between the bearings for 68mm vs. 73mm wide bottom brackets.

Fatter seat tubes , moves the FD mount to the right, so to down shift the same as with standard tube,
the crank has to move to the right too..

Campag race triple , a 111 and a 115 offered for this purpose.

My understanding was it had to do with rear axle spacing. ATBs are often 135mm, but some other bikes that are likely to use the same crank are 130mm. The BB spindle length is changed to preserve the proper chain line.

That's what I think too.

So if my rear axle spacing is 130 and my spindle length is 113, or rear axle spacing is 135 and spindle 118 then a crankset listing spindle length 113,118 in the spec should work if they are both JIS square taper.
