Tires Sizing
Hey Guys,
I have a 2010 Kona Dew hybrid. According to the Kona website, this bike is running Rigida Cyber 10 rim and an Alex ZC-1000 both runnng 700x37c tires.
I was wondering if you guys would be able to tell me what are the skinniest tires I would be able to safely run on these rims?

Measure he outside width of the rim, add a quarter, that's just about the minimum with good profile. though, I've seen people ride smaller and do OK.

looks like 28mm, tho 25 at a push, but if you want to run that narrow, you really have the wrong type of bike

My heavy load carrier is wearing 28mm Conti Ultrasports on Alex rims that are 25.3mm wide outside. The rims were likely 25.5 when new and a match for your rims. But there's been some wear on the braking tracks. The 28's mount up, seat and have a shape that is just fine. But I sure would NOT go any narrower. The shape the 28's give is just barely acceptable to me. As it is they do round out a bit wider than the rim but only by a little. And that rounding out is needed for the carcase to get the proper shape. 25's would mount up with the sidewalls forming a "short" arc instead of a bulged out arc, if that description makes any sense. And with a shape like that you're not working the sidewalls correctly.

That's a 19.6mm rim, so 25 is probably the smallest you want to go. The only risk with small tyres on wide rims is higher probability of pinched flats. I actually prefer to size my rims on the wide range for any given tyre size as I find the cornering is more stable and the wear is better since the curvature at the tread is flatter. It wears across a wider portion of the tyre instead of a thin stripe down the middle.
