Xt mtb hubs-general question

I bought a Shimano XT mtb hub to build a front wheel for my bike. The hub is new but it seems especially stiff for a new hub.I played with the lockrings and still the hub spins with considerably more resistance than road bike hubs I've encountered. Is this normal for MTB hubs? Will they work thenselves in after a while and turn easier? There is no grinding and they turn smoothly just more stiffly. Thanks for your input.

Bikes: Serotta Davis Phinney, 1992 Serotta T Max,1984 Specialized Allez, Olmo, 1974 Strawberry,Redline bmx, ect.,

After you get it built adjust the hub bearings without the outer boots on and puyt a drip of oil on the inside of the seal before you reinstall them.
