Cassette play on the hub, need advice

I was given a pair of rims for my bike in which my existing 12/25 shimano cassette was put on the new/used shimano hub on the new wheel. Problem is there is play, meaning the sprocket wheels are loose. I pulled a schematic from Sheldon and saw that there are spacers under the bolt as well as after the biggest wheel, and these spacers are paper thin. I'm not sure what I'm missing here b/c the change over should have been compatible right? Shimano 105 5700. Anyone with any advice?
Thanks,
Mike

Both hub and cassette is Shimano 105 or just the cassette?

There should be a 1mm spacer which is included with Shimano 10 speed cassette, this is for use on all Shimano freehubs, except Alu freehubs, i.e. 7800 hubs. With the cassette lock ring at 40Nm, there should be no play in it

If the hub is a mavic you may need a 2 mm mavic spacer and the 1 mm Shimano spacer.

The cassette is a 105 and the hub is on a Bonte Race Lite wheel that 'had' or came off a full ultegra bike.

Maybe I'm wrong here but the hub should be shimano. The bike it came off was a total stock Trek with Ultegra.

Thank you for the questions, sorry if my naivete (sp) is painful,
Mike

The hub is a Formula. It's similar to the shimano, but of a lower quality.

Grab the lowest (biggest size) gear and try to wobble it back and forth. While doing this, look between the back of the cassette and the spokes. If the entire cassette seems to be tight when you ratchet it forward, but the whole thing wobbles across the width of the cassette, check the freehub.

Many freehubs will be attached to the hub body with a 12mm. Make sure this is tight.

If so, you have a spacer missing.
