Loud creaking around crank/bottom bracket

Hi,
I was planning to take the bottom bracket apart and overhaul it and just hope that whatever's causing the noise gets fixed. But I was hoping someone here might recognize this symptom and give me some advice. My allez elite has abruptly developed a loud creaking noise in the left side of the crank/bottom bracket area. It only occurs when I start pedaling fairly hard (not ever up on the stand), and only on the down stroke of my left foot. Any ideas? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Likely something loose. I'd suspect the bottom bracket first, then the pedals, then the crank arms, then the saddle, etc. Most likely it's the bottom bracket that a little loose, however.

Don't forget the chainring bolts.

You may not find anything obvious. However, clean all metal-to-metal contact areas thoroughly. On reassembly, apply grease, especially to threads.

I once had a persistent squeak appear on my bike in the cranks. I overhauled the bottom bracket 3 times without success. Then I took the pedals off, cleaned and greased the threads, and reinstalled. The squeak went away.

+1 to BB being loose. They often aren't installed with enough torque at the factory, and then the LBS doesn't check them a lot of times. Experienced the same with chainring bolts, though I wouldn't expect the LBS to catch that one, really.
