Surly fender help
A friend of mine is looking for fenders to fit his Surly, only thing is he rides a larger tire than what came stock with it. I believe it's a 28x1.75 (700x45c or so) tire or perhaps a hair wider. He sent a pic to get an idea of the clearance we're working with, but I haven't come across anything from my distributors that will fit in there. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone.

If your friend is willing to settle for any fender at all, a set of SKS Raceblades or Planet Bike Fast Freddies should fit the bill. They will need to be mounted a bit higher than usual and they will not provide optimal coverage due the fact that they aren't full fenders and they are a tad narrow for the bike's current tires. If your friend is willing to switch to 42c tires and has a bit of cash to spend the Velo Orange Zeppelin fenders in 52mm width would be a classy option. Those two options are the best I can come up with. Ultimately, the 45c tires are a bit too big to really allow the use of fenders on the Surly Cross Check as far as I know. Good luck!

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!
Surly says the Cross Check (that is a Cross Check, right?) will take 700x45 tires without fenders and further says; "Go a bit smaller for fender clearance". What "a bit smaller" means isn't stated but probably the 42's Iverhagen mentioned will work and 38's will almost certainly allow full coverage conventional fenders.
