Broken shifter

I crashed my bike and broke my right shifter. Bike has a Deore rear derailleur, Deore shifter, and 9sp cassette (I'm assuming it's Shimano). Can I replace with any 9 sp Shimano shifter whether it's new or 10 years old?

Yes. All Shimano 9-speed shifters pull the same amount of cable per index ratchet.
