Double crankset for CX; double or triple FD?
Hi all. I need to replace the FD on my 2007 Raleigh Rx 1.0. The stock FD, a Shimano Tiagra FD-4403, suffered a broken spring mechanism (there are multiple BF threads about this, it's pretty common with that model).
Now, the bike came with a double crankset - TruVative Elita Cyclocross, 39/48 teeth to be exact. I'm not sure why it came with a triple FD.
Should I buy a compatible double, or is there a particular reason the manufacturer used a triple, meaning I should replace it with a triple?
Suggestions for replacements are also welcomed. I'm running a 9-speed cassette, and need a 28.6mm clamp on model (bottom pull). I don't really want to buy another FD-4403. They're very hard to find thanks to Shimano's constant "upgrades," and it's obviously a flawed design. Right now I'm looking at a newer Tiagra design, or perhaps even a downgrade to Sora.

The double will be better, no reason to use a triple FD. I would go to Tiagra, but a Sora will work well enough.

deeper back plate pushes up a wider difference between chainring sizes. better,
for the upshifts
Triple FD , probably cost less than compact doubles, for the thousands
that bike building factories buy.
a compact double FD is made to go with the 34/50 combination doubles.
that may do the trick ..
