Plastic piece attached to the chain wheel
Hi! I've got a Trek 3900 (that I absolutely love) but I've got a bit of a problem with it. This plastic piece attached to the chain wheel is detached.
Anyway, more than rambling trying to explain it, here's a couple of pictures!
This is it broken,

This is it "fixed"

Anyway, my question is, how important is that piece, do I just need to take it to a LBS to get them to fix it or can I just say to hell with it and break it off?

I thought it'd be a trouser guard but is seems to be nothing more than a facade, to protect your eyes from the aestethic onslaught of the apparently believed intolerably ugly chainwheel rivets/bolts. If you can't find a zip tie or something to secure it with, break it off. Or remove the pedal to get it off in one piece.
