Hello all.
I am building a road bicycle, using Coppi Genius frame and Campagnolo Veloce groupset. I have trouble finding the right solution for the ferrule to be used for the chainstay cable guide.
The situation is as follows:
I am using standard Campagnolo cable set:
Shift housing with 4.2 mm outer diameter
Shift cable with 1.3 mm diameter
I am using calipers to measure these, so my measurements are pretty accurate.
Since the cables for shifting are of the compressionless type I MUST use a ferrule in all stops except on the Ergos. The ferrules, supplied with the Campagnolo cable set are shown on the picture below:

As you can see the inner diameter of the ferrules is 4.3 mm and fit the shift cable housing perfectly. The outer diameter is 5.7 mm for the standard ferrule and 5.7/3.9 mm for the stepdown ferrule.
I'm trying to use these ferrules to accomodate the rear derailleur cable on the chainstay stop. The chainstay stop is shown in the following pictures:



As can be seen the inner diameter of the bead, where the ferrule should lay is 4.9 mm. In this situation the standard ferrule with 5.7 mm outer diameter doesn't fit. The chainstay stop has a small hole for the cable on the other side (seen on the second picture). As seen from the pictures I tried to scratch the surface of the chainstay stop to see if paint is the problem, but it's not the case. The stepdown ferrule has an outer diameter of 3.9 mm in the recessed portion and fits too loose - i.e. the ferrule is at an angle to the chainstop.

Do any of you know of any (proper) solution for this problem?

But both of those are for brake cables and (I suppose):
1. the hole for the cable is of larger diameter
2. The inside diameter is 5 mm and the shift housing will fit more loosely

My LBS's are of no good, so I don't even want to start a conversation with them. They'll ask question of the sort: "Why do you need a ferrule in first place?" etc.

Don't know what generation Campy you're talking, but the 10 speed Record does require ferrules in the shifters.

My suggestion is to use a ferrule that fits the frame well, and then use whatever cable housing fits the ferrule properly, which may be 5mm compressionless. Either of the ferrules you found can also be carefully gripped in a drill chuck and spun against a file to customize the outer diameter.

Campagnolo Veloce 2010. As far as I know Veloce is only a recent low end groupset- i.e. there isn't old Veloce from the 70's or something like that.
And yes... I wrote that I MUST use ferrule.

Thanks mechBgon. The idea of using a drill is great. I was about to do this manually on a sand paper, or using angle grinder.

Those 'diver's helmet' braze ons are rather an older type,
so use what ferrules you need to get the job done.

Shift cable run over the BB on that frame , per chance?

I used that braze on , on a frame I built in the mid 70's.
there are some ferrules made where they have an inside diameter ,
big enough to take the housing fitted with those brass bits
already on the ends.

For the purpose.. my favorite..

i'd say if the step down ferrule fits , use it. ,, the end butting into the base
of that braze-on I should think, is good enough the half mm of sideways
clearance may not matter..
Doesn't on my friction shifted stuff..

I took your statement that you must use a ferrule in all stops except on the Ergos to mean that you believe you don't need ferrules in the shifters, but I believe you might need them there. Of course the 2010 shifters are different than the previous generation (like when Record was 10 speed). Check your instructions.

Thanks fietsbob. I positioned the frame upside down to take the pictures... So, the "diver's helmet" braze-on is on the lower side of the chainstay. Shift and rear brake cables run under the bottom bracket.
I would say the stepdown ferrule, supplied with the Campagnolo cableset isn't appropriate for the job as the ferrule channel in the "diver's helmet" braze-on is very shalow. In this way under the strain of the cable the ferrule sits up to 30 degrees sideways from the line of the cable.
Anyways... I ordered a ferrule like this - https://www.todayscyclist.co.uk/produ...x?X=JWBP206SIL These ferrules fit the 4.3 mm Campagnolo shift cable and have thicker walls, so I suppose I can make it to 5 mm outside diameter, needed to fit.

This should work. Description: Campagnolo Stepped Gear Ferrule 4mm. It should take 4mm cable which is what the coiled wire gear cable is on old steel bikes. Or you can use modern SHIFT cable and housing which is 4mm. Brake cable housing is 5mm and probably won't fit. https://www.condorcycles.com/product...d-gear-ferrule These are extremely hard to find. Folks want $10+ each plus shipping on Ebay. This company's price as I write this, is $2.99 each and $5 US shipping. So buy some extras.
