1) unless it's a triple, the spindle wouldn't be long enough
2) 73mm frame usually means MTB and MTB style bowed chainstays which don't work with road sized rings.

Two different animals. That isn't saying you can't get the stuff in there, and with some effort not make it work, it's probably not worth the expense. OTOH I'm not sure that the 105 spindle has enough length to fit a MTD BB sucessfully. Why fiddle with it? Get the right parts.

Cycling News says this:
Just gotta hope your frame likes the setup.
the 5700 bottom bracket is compatible for use with all the Shimano Hollowtech II road cranksets.

yes, it should work.
one thing you might want to consider for that type of bottom bracket is to get the BB shell faced if it isn't already.
it's not absolutely necessary, but it does save wear and tear on the crank axle.

Well, that bike should have a 68mm English threaded bottom bracket shell. I think you're saying you want to use a 5600 crankset with 5700 bearing cups (English thread). The answer is yes, it will work. You might want to take it to a bike shop and ask them to check and see if your bottom bracket shell faces need to be faced before installing the outboard bearing cups. Parallel faces of the shell are fairly critical with this type of bottom bracket bearings.
