Hayes HFX-9 problem

I am having a problem with my brake. one of the pistons is not being pulled back into its boar resulting in a lot of brake rub. I pushed the piston back into its boar a few times and it still will push out and not be pulled back in. Is there anyway to fix this because the brake rub is significant enough to make me not ride the bike. Thanks a lot.

The pistons do not have a return mechanism. So when you release the brake lever, the pads are no longer forced against the disc, but the pads are not pulled away. Rather, the pads become free to "float". Slight rubbing is normal. Car disc brakes work the same way too.

Are the pads and rotor new? I installed new pads and rotor and the pads seemed to rub more than I liked. The pads would rub and I could it was putting a slight drag on the wheel. Perhaps the pads and rotor were on the "thicker" side of their allowable manufacturing tolerances. Within a couple of rides, a clearance developed and now all is well.

If you search the forums- especially the mountain bike forum- you'll find alot of posts about this problem. I had the same problem, took my bike in to have the brakes adjusted, and had a mech tell me that there is a (sort of) "10 second rule". If you can spin the wheel and it spins freely for at least 10 seconds due to brake rub, that's deemed "acceptable." He said the HFX-9's were fine brakes (not the best, but good), and some rubbing is normal with today's discs. Turns out my brakes DID need adjusted, but they still rub a little. Not all the time, but especially after using them alot (like after a downhill section when I'm on the brakes quite alot.)
