I would really love to mod the guts of some Shimano downtube or barend levers (the countersprung ones that switch to a sort of microindexed friction) into some Ergolevers. Ergos are the one brifter design that doesn't necessitate indexing; you can engage the lever and the button together to move the derailleur back/forth.

I reckon it'd be feasible for someone like a toolmaker or fitter and turner...

And you know what I'd have then? Brifters with universal compatibility, baby
