chain whip repair

how does one replace the chain on a cheap chain whip?

i've got a cheap whip (the park whip cost $60NZ at the LBS) and there's nothing wrong with the handle, but one of the rollers on the chain split in half not the kind of failure i'd expected.

i just don't see how to get the pin in/out, around the handle. any tips?

thanks...

Something like a nailset for finish nails to get the pin out and a bench vise to get the new one in has worked for me in the past.

Yep, a nailset or pin punch will drive out the pin. Replace the chain by pushing out a standard pin just enough to slip the chain over the handle (do not push it all the way out), center the pin over the hole and drive it in with a hammer. I'd use a punch to stake both ends of that pin to improve the strength

I attach the chain sections on my chain whips with the master link for 1/8" chains.

the tool is basically a piece of hot rolled steel flat bar, with holes drilled in it,
to pin chain thru.

Whip it!

I use a hardened bolt and a lock nut to attach my chains.
