bike top tube, on shoulder, arm under downtube holds handlebar end,
so wheel doesn't flop.

Traditional horizontal top tubes are much easier to shoulder and balance than compact style sloping top tubes. In some sizes of compact frame, there is not enough room to get your arm though once you have fitted water bottles.
Some CX bikes have the top tube flared horizontally where you shoulder the bike for a more comfortable portage.

On tour I carry a webbing strap to haul my bike up the steepest slopes.
