Adjustments Gone Wrong

Hello. I finally purchased a proper bike after two failed C2W scheme attempts with previous employers. Problem is, my Triban 3 was delivered with the derailer rubbing against the chain. I had a look at a few videos and seemed to be doing ok.

I then tried to adjust where it was positioned along the seat post. A lot of tension was released and thinking back I can't remember if I did that while it was on the small chain ring as I should have. After struggling to get the right tension I eventually got it to shift the gears again but the derailer was still not perfect. I decided to reposition it against the seat post again and then after that, despite the cable being tight enough by feel - nothing happens. Holding onto to the cable I can feel almost no movement while attempting to shift up a gear. It is as if the shifting mechanism is disengaged from the cable inside the handle bar.

I used the barrel adjuster but the added tension does nothing. I am certail it is not a deraileur issue as I have pulled the cable manually and it moves onto the middle chainring.

Here is a picture of the shifter for reference.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Craig

Craig. Likely your shifter isn't in the relaxed (inner) position. You have to start from the beginning. Release the cable anchor bolt on the derailleur. Reposition the derailleur according to the manufacturer's instructions. You should have only a few mm of air gap between the largest chainring and the derailleur cage when it's extended over the outer chainring. The derailleur cage lead edge should be parallel to the chainring plane. Etc.

Next, release the shifter to the most relaxed position, usually by clicking the small lever until it won't click any more. You may have to pull on the exposed inner cable end to assist, not sure on older Shimano.

Then re-attach the cable to the binder bolt, pull it snug, and tighten.

There are YouTube videos that show this procedure, I've just given a summary explanation.

In the picture on the left I have drawn a line where I should be able to see exposed cable (as I can on the other shifter).

I looked at some Youtube videos that show integrated shifters but could not see any that are the same as mine. After lifting the wraps on both sides I could only see one screw (as circled on the picture). Do you think it is this one I have to use to open it up.

You loosen the other end, the cable clamp on the derailleur itself.

NB even if you get the adjustment compromise right , the chain will rub,
in 'cross chain' combinations.

The engineers did not accommodate user errors.

You did not submit a resume of your abilities, so maybe you need the LBS to help you.

dundeebarefeet, don't mess with anything inside the shifter; no messing with that screw will not help the problem. What you first need to do is get everything back to where it was before; meaning disconnect front derailleur cable at the derailleur (not the shifter!) and re-position the front derailleur where it was before. The reason the cables look different in the shifters is the front derailleur cable is too loose. the shifter has a black tab about where your thumb will lay with your right hand on top of the brake/ shifter. Pull on the derailleur end of the cable while you repeatedly push down on the tab. Once the tab stops clicking, pull the cable end at the derailleur end tight and attach it to the derailleur; make sure the housings are also in place. If you try and shift the front derailleur now and it doesn't move on the first click, then the cable is not yet tight enough. You can either disconnect the cable and pull it tighter or turn the inline adjuster; to tighten the cable turn the adjuster counter clockwise as if you were unscrewing it. If the adjuster comes apart, it means you need to disconnect the cable from the derailleur again, screw the adjuster as far as it will go together and then reattach to the derailleur.
