IMO TiN is likely the best thing to have a chain plated in; it's tough as buggery and looks the bomb.
Is this the gold stuff early Dura-Ace freewheels were coated in, perhaps? Seems a bit ahead of the curve if so.

Reactive sputtering of TiN has been a known microfabrication process since the beginning of the 80's (it was and still is used as a diffusion barrier conductive layer). Whether it was used to deposit TiN on steel earlier than 1980, I don't know, possible but not super-likely.
