Wrap Bars With Three Colors?

I am interested in how to combine three colors in a handlebar wrap.

This is for a French bike, I want to do a tricolor wrap - red, white, blue.

Is there a way to interweave three colors in a harlequin-like wrap? I do the conventional harlequin with two colors, but have never seen three.

Or, suppose I did the left part of the bars red, the middle white, and the right blue. This would require colors to butt up against each other. Is there a clean, non-lumpy way to do that?

I'd like to use cloth tape, if it matters.

Bikes: Too many to list here!

Consider me interested in whether or not this works. I've been wondering the same thing.

This isn't very creative, I'm sorry to say, but I was thinking that the only natural seam can be at the brake levers. Taking a cue from the track bike/fixed gear crowd, why not have the lower portion of the drops in one color (say, blue, although which of the three may depend on the frame and trim colors), and then have the white and third color (say, red) done in the harlequin pattern above the levers as usual?

Another way might take its cue from way we joint carpeting, with an adhesive tape beneath, that makes a butt joint stay together. You could use a portion of cloth tape (maybe a two inch portion) beneath where two colors meet, to join them underneath). That way, you'd not be introducing much of a "lump" and the edges would resist peeling up. Does this make sense?

Good luck. I often just use the finishing tape to introduce the country colors of a frame's origin. These can be done tastefully with just narrow (~1/8") strips mated on a black or grey background. PG

Maybe switch colors at hoods?

why don't you pick two colors and for the third color use thread. There are some folks that have done it. It basically looks harlequin with a touch of that third color. You'll probably need to shellac it though..

You can do harlequin wrap with four rolls but only three colours. For instance I did this on my bike - two black, one maroon and one grey:

F.U.B.A.R. makes some nice 3 color bar tapes. All their products are half off right now. https://www.fubarbicycleproducts.com/...lebartape.aspx

Looks great! How do you do a three color harlequin wrap? I know how to do a standard two color harlequin wrap, if that helps.

Oh, thinking about it, I think I see. You know how you start a harlequin wrap by folding and joining two tapes, each oriented to wrap around the bar in a different direction, as shown in fig 4-6 here

https://www.wastedlife.org/bike/harlequin/index.html

I'm guessing you place the maroon and grey tapes side by side and join them to two black tapes placed side by side. And I think you could do a four color wrap the same way, if one of the black tapes was a fourth color. Right?

^ Yeah, basically. If you can do two tape harlequin you can do four. Here's a picture of when I started, I think it shows how the four tapes weave together:
