Freehub Compatibility

I've rebuilt an old wheel to use on my trainer and as a back up (so I don't wear through my good tires as I still ride outside a lot during the winter). It's got an older Ultegra hub, FH-6500. I've put a new 105 10 speed cassette on it. The freehub body itself is noisy as hell when free-wheeling, a little wobbly, and I'm getting a clicking noise under load on the trainer. Almost sounds like RD noise, but that's seems to be adjusted fine. I sprayed the freehub with WD40 when I had everything apart, then drizzled triflow in it until it came out the back nice and clean. I'm thinking it is shot, is probably 7-8 years old. Maybe I need a heavier oil, not sure. The hub bearings are adjusted correctly.

If I'm gonna take it all apart to clean again and re-lube, why not replace it if not too pricey. If I do replace it, I'm curious what freehubs amongst the various groups are compatible. The Shimano website and tech docs are not that helpful. This interchangeability doc may as well be written in Greek, no idea what the abbreviations mean. From what I understand doing some research, any 8/9/10 speed Shimano freehub body should fit on the wheel hub and work with my newer 6700 Ultegra 10 speed drivetrain. So, I'd hope this will do the trick:

https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-FH-450...ef=pd_sbs_sg_9

This is to save some $$ and time instead of special ordering the exact match for the hub that Shimano says I need. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Mark

First of all, why do you care about a noisy freehub for a wheel you plan to use on a trainer? You won't be doing much coasting anyway.

However to put your mind at ease, Freehub lubrication needs are very simple, since there are no moving parts under load. When you're pedaling the freewheel mechanism is locked and the freehub turns as a unit with the wheel, so the only wear will be at the axle bearings. When your coasting the freewheel mechanism overuns, but the only loads are the light ratchet springs. So any light oil is fine, though a heavier oil, or a light grease film (no more than a film) will soften the tiny impacts of the pawls clicking into place and make the freehub quieter.

If your freehub has a port to add a heavier oil, do so, otherwise put your mind at ease and enjoy the bike.

Any 8/9/10-speed Shimano freehub body will work but the required seals and dust covers may not match the ones on your 6500 hub. For indoor trainer use this is not a big deal since you don't have to worry about water or dirt getting in. As FBinNY said, the freehub won't be required to coast anyway so noise shouldn't be a consideration. If the old one is worn enough to wobble noticably then replacement is probably worth the expense.

Maybe the FH body fixing bolt is loose?

Here's a cheaper body. You just have to remove it from the hub.

I have a question which I'M probably posting in the wrong topic, but I don't want to open a thread...

SO, I Have a FH1051 rear hub from shimano 105 series, and theoretically it can adopt seven speed casettes, though some mechs told me they were unable to use the UG compatible 7 spd casette on my hub, as it has no space for it...

Yet, I'd like to opt for the STI shifters, and I've heard successfull experiences with campa ergos pre 99 mating with shim6 speed casettes and shifting flawlessly... My rear derailleur is from the tricolor 600 series, RD6400 as I recall it correctly. Would this rear mech with the 6 spd casette work with some campagnolo avanati shifters (eight speed, from around mid90s) ? What modifications should I make to have it shift correctly and perfectly?

Thanks for the kind responses and help. CHeers
