Rebuilding an '80s De Rosa w/ Campy

A friend of mine has an '80s era Dr Rosa with Campy components. He wants to get rid of downtube shifters and get the cables inside the frame.

1) Will current shifters work with older components?
2) If not, will he have to replace all of the components or just deraileurs?
3) He's got Campy Delta brakes (he says). Can he keep those?
4) Will it be possible to run the cables through the frame? He doesn't mind if they have to drill, etc., since he's getting the frame re-painted anyway.

I'm using C-Record Delta calipers with my Record Titanium Ergopower levers with no problems whatsoever. I also have a C-Record front deraileur, that shifts beautifully. I did have to change to a Record Titanium rear deraileur when I got the Ergopower, because the C-Record parallelogram was at the wrong angle to work with the indexed shifting. I think the spring may be too strong, too, but I could be wrong.

A new RD to work with index shifters, and the cogset may not be index compatible either. He shouldn't be drilling the frame, and the rear brake cable is the only one typically enclosed. It could be done professionally when repainted.

Oh yeah .... he's not doing any of this himself. We're just trying to get an idea of what the job's going to entail. The FD cable and the rear brake cable can't go inside the frame?

This is an insanely expensive upgrade. By the time he's done he'll wish he hadn't done it, especially if you haven't taken away his drill yet.

My Gianni Motta time trial steel frame from 1986 +- a year or two has all the cables run inside: the braze on for the shifters is above the downtube and the cables for FD and RD go directly inside tube, the RD one gets out from right chainstay about 5 inches from the dropout, the FR one just up of bottom bracket, in the rear.
Rear brake cable together with the housing goes inside top tube. I have seen similar setup on several bikes.

Ok, time trial bike being a possible exception. Good catch.
