Shimano Deore crank help needed

All:
I have a Shimano Deore 50/40/30 triple crank (square BB) on an older Trek 520 that I want to replace. But ... there are cap covers over the crank and arm bolts with two small holes in each. With a make-shift pin (couple of nails) I can twist them slightly then they get tight again.
Is there a specific method for removing these caps before I bung them up completely?
I'm replacing the crank with a Sugino XD.
Thanks,
Michael Fletcher

Thanks,
These aren't slotted like some I've seen, but rather two pins that look as if there is to be a specific tool to insert and twist. I can twist the cap a few degrees with a couple nails held with needle noose pliers then the cap gets tight again.

You need a pin spanner. Or you can replace the caps with an 8mm allen bolt. I've done that with all of my cranks. A cleaner look and solution, IMO.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

You can make your own pin spanner with a coat hanger. Just cut off about a 12" section and bend it into a "U". You'll probably have to sharpen the ends to get it to fit into the little holes.

I second replacing the bolts with 8mm allen bolts. You should be able to get a pair from an LBS.
