I have Campy chorus 8 speed groupset and after 20,000 miles my large chain ring is pretty much shot! (Campy crap anyway!!) My question is: will the 1o speed chain ring set work with my system. I'm seeing in some places that with a shim between the chain rings that it should. The 8-9 speed stuff is harder to find at reasonable (to me) prices. Is this accurate? I've found the 10 speed pair (52/39t) for less money than just the larger chain ring form the bike shop. I'm all for supporting the bike shops, and do regularly, but this is substantial differences.

Experience? Wisdom?

Hmm.. The deal with campagnolo is that w/o testing is hard to know. I use campagnolo but i skipped the 9 and 8 era because i went straight from downtube shifters to 10 speed ok?

I really dont know the spacing between the chainrings, but the differerence between 8 and 10 speed chainrngs is that the 10 speed ones are thinner, so if you put them in the 8 speed crankset i suspect you might have 2 issues:

1 - you might ran out of threads in the bolts and thats the reason of those spacers, besides keeping the chain rings spaced correctly.
2 - If you put 10 speed chainrings w/o spacers the chainrings will be too close and then you will have a lot of chances of chain rub.

What you can do is to put the 10 speed chainrings and instead of using the campy spacers just use a washer, as long as you are close to the real spacing you should be ok.

Hope you are using a 10 speed chain, will work just fine with 8 speed. Drive train will get more silent.

Now that last I DIDN'T know. The 10 speed stuff is so much easier to find. I've been ordering the 8-9 speed chains when I've needed them. I went from a 1978 Motobecane with Suntour stem shifters to a Waterford with this set up. Quite an upgrade!! I now average about 3700 miles a year.

If I understand you correctly, the issue is going to be more with the derailleur working properly on the 10 speed chain rings and that's the reason for the spacers. I was thinking the chain would be more problematic, but this makes more sense to me.

Chainrings dont have speeds , jut teeth and the thickness of the teeth.

10 speed is the hot new sales thing, so they are machining new ones today , to make new stuff.

Campag machines the rings from 7075 alloy ..TA makes 135 bcd replacement rings
using the same alloy.

French, Vs Italian, there may be other sources in the aftermarket to buy from.

QBP swtocks a bunch of spare parts order through LBS or other web Retailers .

they don't sell direct.

You can even use 10 speed chain with an old campagnolo 7 or 5 speeds as long as the chain clear the teeth is fine.

As for what are you asking about the FD, IMO the real issue is cross chain, the two chainrings will be too close then you will have less space for cross chain but big chance it will work just fine too. Campagnolo FDs will shift anything, (you can even put a shimano FD and will shift just fine), you can test, probably will work just fine, worse case scenario you'll need to add washers to spacer tiny more the chainrings.

REVISITED:
I now have new to me chain rings (10 speed) and a new chain and new rear derailleur cogs and am having issues. The minute I put any pressure on the pedals, the chain jumps. It's not a derailleur adjustment issue at all. That seems to be spot on and the chain does not shift on the cassette. I can't tell if the jump is in the front or the rear. I checked my rear all out and found out that Campy actually has a atop and bottom cog and labels even the direction! That's all correct.
That leaves me thinking there has to be something with with the chain rings. It's marginally worse in the small chain ring, but does it in both.

This jumping is hard to describe. It feels and looks like the chain is skipping, but it stays in the gear I've placed it in.

Ideas?? Solutions?? What am I overlooking/missing?
