FSA 10spd chains...

Who makes FSA 10spd chains? I want to get a few quick-connectors for my road bike, but gotta know which brand. KMC (for kmc/shimano chains) or SRAM? Supposedly there is a difference? I'm new to 10spd...

Thanks

Bikes: Bianchi circa late 1980s, Surly Cross Check, Kona Blast

You can use a chain by Shimano, SRAM or KMC, they are all compatible.

I believe KMC writes "compatible with Shimano, SRAM and Campgnolo 10 speed" or something right on the package.

As far as chain goes, I'm fairly confident that the size of the links are universally standard.

I just want to know which quick-links I can use. I'll probably buy KMC, something tells me they make chains for most everyone anyway...I think the KMC links say for "KMC and Shimano" but thats just what I see online.

The chain should give me a year or two of service, so no worries there, its brand new

Not quite. While almost any 10-speed chains will work on any 10-speed drivetrain, different makes of chains have slightly different inner plate width dimensions. Shimano and KMC (and Wippermann I believe) require a slightly wider master link than SRAM chains. A KMC/Shimano link will be a loose fit in a SRAM chain and a SRAM link will be difficult to impossible to use in a KMC/Shimano chain.

The OP was wondering who makes "FSA" chains and, therefore, which link to buy.

When I take my chain off to clean the factory goop out of it (very much looks like KMC goop) I will measure the inner plate @ the pin hole. That might tell me more? I have calipers, so I should be all set.

I don't have any KMC chains but I just miked a couple of cut-offs from two Shimano and two Wippermann 10-speed chains and got the following measurements across the pin holes of the inner plates:

Shimano: 0,148"- 0.149"
Wippermann: 0.149" - 0.151"

So if your FSA chain is in this range, the KMC/Shimano link will work.

I hope you don't clean the factory lube off the chain for at least 1,000 miles. It's the best lube the chain will ever see. https://www.fuchs-lubritech.com/cms/s...d_produkt=2993

Bikes: Cheltenham-Pedersen racer, Boulder F/S Paris-Roubaix, Varsity racer, '52 Christophe, '62 Continental, '92 Merckx, '75 Limongi, '76 Presto, '72 Gitane SC, '71 Schwinn SS, etc.

The chain also might be made by Yaban, btw. Another big Chinese maker of modern narrow racing chains.

I wouldn't use a SRAM link, simply because they are so hard to remove without special pliers or a very practiced technique using regular pliers.

I vote for the KMC link.

I put a well-used SRAM 10s link on a friend's broken Shimano 10s chain, out on the road, and I had to really work the link for a couple of minutes to free it enough to be rideable. Luckily the link had some wear on it.

KMC makes a link similar to the SRAM 8s/9s PowerLINK, and they also make one similar to the 10s SRAM PowerLOCK. When you buy a 10s KMC chain, either type may be in the box. So you may as well buy the Park MLP-1 so you are prepared.

No grease on my chains. Grease attracts dirt which then wears the chain and drivetrain to nothing.

I've never left the factory grease on my chains! Never an issue...

THANK YOU!!!

0.148" is what I got. KMC link it is! The link on there comes off easily like they ALL do for me, push the link sides IN towards eachother, then push the ends together, snaps right apart. This doesnt work as well once they get the tiniest amount of dirt in them. But both 8 and 9 speed SRAM links snap apart just fine like this...

I'll order a sheet of 6. They are cheap enough to have a few in the seat bag!

Ordered the links last night, and also cleaned the chain, checked the rear derailleur limit screws (they were set properly), and oiled the chain. I think tomorrow I am going to hang her up on the bike hook till roads are cleaner around here. At least by then I will have spare links, just in case Spring can't come quick enough!
