Bicycle Chain

Hi All,

I have a 28" Schwinn Voyager 21 speed bicycle. Please tell me the details required in order to buy a new bicycle chain.

Thank you,
Bob

Bikes: N+1+1+1+1+1 etc

If it's 3x7 then the Sram PC 850 is the one you need

Bikes: Too many to list here!

The details are the number of speeds it's intended to be used with on the rear, generally that's all you need to know until you get to seriously high-end stuff. The fact that it's a 21-speed is irrelevant, what matters is that it's a 7-speed rear.

any derailleur bike with less than 9 'speeds' uses the same 3/32 wide chain .. 5 6 7 8//

Check the URL above. 7spd chains for $2.50. Shipping extra. I once made a big order and they give me free shipping. But they silver chains they claimed were 8-spd for $3.50 a while back, and I bought like a dozen.

When you get a new chain, you will have to shorten it to match your old chain. Just line it up alongside the old one and remove the excess links on the new one. You will need a chain tool for this.

No, that assumes the old one was properly sized, and in any case one has to match link to link, not total length. Just do a search for replace bike chain - Sheldon and Park Tool sites are preferred.

If you find that when you put the new chain on, that it skips when you press hard on the pedals, it means that you will also need to change the rear gears (cassette or freewheel). Don't throw away the old chain until you have determined that the new one does not skip.
