Sora 7-speed Brifters + Alivio FD/RD + Suntour 6-speed Freewheel
My "rehabilitation" of a 1979 Raleigh-made road bike has run into a snag:
Obviously, the easiest solution would be a pair of "regular" Shimano brake levers, leaving me to happily roll with the Suntour stem-mounted shifters and drive train; however, the lowest price I can find for a pair of new Shimano R400 brake levers is $40 (including S/H). I've spent a lot of time on assembly/cleaning/reassembly, and a good sum of money on a new wheelset + tires, and I really don't want to spend any more. OTOH, it reminds me of the famous "I'm only two-inches away from happiness" line in that move-which-shall-remain-unnamed, and if all that's standing between me and riding is $40, perhaps that's the way to go.
The original handlebars are 25.4mm, and the clamp on the Shimano "Tourney" brake levers is sized to fit them. But the handlebars are small (not very wide)
and uncomfortable for me. The new Nitto "Dirt Drop" stem "prefers" 26.0mm handlebars (I have a 46cm Nitto "Noodle" available for my use), but those dang
brake-lever clamps won't fit!
In the spare-parts bin, I have a pair of NOS Shimano "Sora" 7-speed brifters, along with a matched set of Shimano "Alivio" derailleurs (FD-M413/RD-M410) -- will these components "play nicely" with the Suntour "Ultra-6" 6-speed freewheel?and uncomfortable for me. The new Nitto "Dirt Drop" stem "prefers" 26.0mm handlebars (I have a 46cm Nitto "Noodle" available for my use), but those dang

According to Sheldon, Suntour Ultra-6 and Shimano 7-speed both have 5.0 mm c-c sprocket spacing, so it should work. One of the shifter's gears will be locked out by one of the RD's limit screws.
