Try visiting today.

Or try visiting after their liquidation sale ends - they are going out of business as soon as they sell everything?

Home Depot and Lowes both carry metric bolts in a fairly wide variety of sizes and shapes.

They must have a more cosmopolitan selection at their stores in the East - here in the Heartland, I have been disappointed countless times at Lowes and HD.
I have resorted more than once to ordering stuff from Bolt Depot. Easy to spend more on shipping than on the goods but they have everything.

I've also used the Bolt Depot, as mentioned above. I needed some replacement caliper centering screws for some FSA K-force brakes and they had exactly what I needed in SS. Of the online stores that I searched through, these guys actually had a navigable website and I was able to easily find what I needed. The others didn't (at least that I saw).

I know it's a bit dated, but I've scoured home desperate, west marine, & the local bike shop. it's a challenge to get heads, threads, & lengths to match up...

[QUOTE=joejack951;16036951]More over, a #10-32 button head is essentially the same fastener and those are typically even easier to find.

NO. More specifically, #10-32 is easier to find, and almost fits, but won't hold properly can will likely damage threads.

does Wall Mart just not recognize the Metric system, as valid, yet ?

+1 A 10-32 is a sloppy fit in a properly drilled and tapped M5x0.8 hole and won't hold well. The tap drill for an M5x.8 bolt is 4.3 mm or 0.1693". For a #10-32 it's a #21 or 0.1590". That's close but no cigar.

The thread pitches are within a few ten thousandths of an inch. The tolerances ranges for the threads just about overlap (yes, a 10-32 is slightly smaller than an M5). Would I use a 10-32 in place of an M5 in a critical application? No, of course not. If I was stuck and needed a fastener to get my bike back on the road would I? Of course.

In hindsight, I should not have said "essentially the same" but something more like "close enough for a non-critical fastener."

No. The US and Burma are still on the English system.

The OP was looking for a screw for a clamp mount front derailleur. Desperate times and desperate measures, maybe, but I don't know whether I'd ever be desperate enough to try that application for a #10-32 on a build.

thanks -

I placed an order Wednesday morning and it was delivered Thursday afternoon. I will certainly make this my "go-to" place for hardware.

Paramount1973 03-29-14 12:53 AM

I guess I'm lucky. I have a True Value hardware store on the way home from work that carries a full selection of metric stainless fasteners in button, hex or philips head, M3 through M10.

dweenk 03-29-14 08:44 AM

McMaster Carr has lots of metric hardware. Try them.
