Source For Small Items??????....Like a screw or two?

Nothing local like a mom and pop fastener shop? I use ours (Ja-Lu Fasteners) simply due to the fact they have every type of fastener you can think of, and are usually very cheap.

rms13 09-05-13 04:16 PM

Home Depot?

Does anyone know of a place where one can get stuff like this, that costs like $6.00/hundred, in quantities of maybe five for, let's say.............five bucks, sent with forty-six cent first class postage.

Without a $15 handling charge???

Thanks.

Doubtful. It's not worth someone's time to count out five small screws, put them in an envelope, seal and address the envelope, issue an invoice and process a payment, for $5.

If you've got a local hardware store they might be willing to help. If you've got a vaguely local hardware store give them a call and ask if they can chuck something in an envelope for you if you send them the cash.

Ask the mechanics at your LBS.

We did have a local hardware store, until the Wal-Mart opened up then Home Depot and Lowe's (almost across the street from one another) showed up in the next town......that pretty well killed everyone except for the Love's (a national chain) truckstop down at the freeway and the Post Office. The mail lady, Randa, is my parts supplier.

There are 469 residents in my town. I keep waiting for one of the other 468 to open a bike shop.

cny-bikeman 09-05-13 04:40 PM

Pretty much every chain hardware store carries metric bolts now, though maybe not with a button head. Ace, True Value, etc.

HillRider 09-05-13 04:47 PM

Home Depot and Lowes both carry metric bolts in a fairly wide variety of sizes and shapes.

Is there a hardware store in a nearby town, or do Home Depot/Lowes/Wally World sell the screws you're looking for?

What exactly is it you're looking for? In the UK you can often find good bargains on fleabay.

You can get anything on eBay.

gregjones 09-05-13 05:20 PM

Enough.

dsbrantjr 09-05-13 07:43 PM

Maybe not 5, but if you need them...

Maybe you could sell the extras on EBay.

The national home centers around here have dismal selections of metric bits.

Even at that they will have a decent selection of M4 through M8 or M10 mm bolts. The OP needs an M5x.8 and these are everywhere.

Metacortex 09-05-13 08:05 PM

I recommend Totally Stainless, they have an excellent selection of metric and english stainless fasteners of all types.

Don't go to Wallace Builders Supply on HWY27, the closest hardware anything around here unless you need a toilet, sheetrock, or a warped 2X4.

They will send you on down the road before "meter" comes out of your mouth.

Milli............. gets you out the door before the rest of the word comes out.

gregjones 09-05-13 08:56 PM

Cheryl has to go to the pulmonary doctor for some spirosomething test a week from today. I will check at HD and Lowe's then and report back.

Thanks.

I bought some from McMaster. A full box. What length do you need? Stainless steel button head M5.

I'm in Alabama. Can drop a few in the mail for you.

arider 09-06-13 05:52 AM

Try http://www.boltdepot.com/Default.aspx

graycenphil 09-06-13 06:29 AM

I never bought a single bolt from McMaster-Carr, but have always had pleasant expriences with them. They have everything, ship very quickly and just charge the actual shipping cost.

dbg 09-06-13 06:36 AM

I still visit "Loose Screws Bicycle Small Parts" website frequently. http://www.loosescrews.com/

likebike23 09-06-13 06:36 AM

If you can wait for them to ship, these are pretty reasonably priced and in small quantities. The shipping might be more than the screws though. http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cg...83&c=Fasteners

reptilezs 09-06-13 07:11 AM

lowes and home depot have metric screws. if you come to my work i have a plano box full for free

More over, a #10-32 button head is essentially the same fastener and those are typically even easier to find.

I second McMaster Carr though as a source for very quick hardware at reasonable prices. I'm a bit of a hardware nut so I have multiple sizes of button head M5 hardware in my tool box, as they are so very useful on bikes (rack, bottle cages, fenders, etc.). I also keep all (or most of) the extra hardware that either comes with new parts or that I take off other bikes (assuming it's in good shape) just in case. I hate being stuck without a necessary fastener.

So many of the bolts and screws on deailers etc are proprietary, if a LBS dont have them in their wonder box of of assorted nuts and bolts, they may have to order parts packets from the manuf.

Sure, if you go to Wally World everybody knows just what that screw looks like. Obviously I wasn't specific enough, as I don't keep precise dimensions in my head. Fortunately...

That was easy. An M5 x 0.8 is the kind of thing you can make yourself if all else fails, but I'll bet you can find bucketloads of them on ebay.

fietsbob 09-06-13 04:10 PM

OP pulled question "Last edited by gregjones; 09-05-13 at 04:21 PM. Reason: Didn't realize question was stupid."

contango 09-06-13 05:07 PM

Fair enough... I just got back on the forum because my virus checker kept blocking it, so didn't see that.

Never mind.
