I'm joining the "can't help you this way" chorus. There's a limit to what we can do sight unseen based on vague descriptions. At some point a good faith request for help becomes an imposition on strangers. If you haven't already crossed this line, you're about as close as possible.

Your best bet if you don't want to go to a bike shop, is to find a co-op where you dan learn how to do it yourself with someone there to advise. Otherwise there are many repair courses available, where you can learn in a consistent, methodical way.

Otherwise, I'm out.

also, bought the bike second hand, not from the store. there's no telling what the bike has been through. this project seems like a loss.
I had mechanical disc brake originally on the bike, I put my Shimano brakes on fine, the free hub only broke 2 days ago, things just keep going wrong with the bike. I'll upload some pictures later, I can't at the minute because im at school.

take it to a shop mate. you'll be better off. but, if you insist on doing your own wrenching, look at Park Tool's site. they have a blog with seriously detailed repair instructions and tutorials.

lates, good luck.

Why do you insist on giving the absolute minimum in regards to info needed to solve your issue. We ask for specific information and pictures and descriptions and you give us vague answers.

I still don't know if you truly have a freehub or a freewheel and there is a huge distinction between the two.

fwiw, most multispeed disc rears have freehubs. But, tbf, there are exceptions, plus (of course) we have no way of knowing if Fowler98 has discs front and rear, or just the front....

But, really, I wouldn't sweat it, bobotech. Fowler98's bike will remain broken until he either gives us pics and info or his staff takes him to a bike shop. Accept it: you can't help those who refuse to be helped.

Its a generational thing, he prolly <3 bikes but his brain is limited to 140 characters. Oh, and he needs a new wheel.

Nonsense. #1 , if he's a member of the generation you're referring to, they looooove to post pics, generally speaking. #2 , observe:

"My wheels won't engage, hub is marked XBrand and it has a threaded freewheel, which is old. Please advise."

82 characters.

I agree that he needs a new wheel. Possibly 2 new wheels, a new drivetrain, new frameset, etc....

Your freehub is broken. You might fix it with new small parts (some use a circular spring which activates all the pawls unless it breaks). You might replace it with a new freehub (they're different for each hub and not aways available. Shimano freehubs are easy to come by but no-name parts may not be). You might replace the hub (but that would require rebuilding the wheel which is beyond your abilities, and can run $70-$100 for labor alone where rent and wages are high). You might replace the wheel.

Time to take it into a shop and ask them about a new wheel. Make sure to take the old wheel (or the whole bike) in with you so they know what size of wheel you need.

The problem and possible solutions have been explained repeatedly. If you can't interpret and carry out what has been suggested you need to have a good mechanic look at it and give you an estimate for repair. Not everyone is cut out to work on mechanical systems.

Spray it down with WD-40. The freewheel hub inside, not the gears.

That's a freewheel. New one, $20 or so.
