"Bricking" a reservoir?
Ok, i don't know where i saw this, but in the last week or two, someone refered in passing to "bricking" a new camelback reservoir. Since i just bought one of those snazzy new Omega reservoirs, can anybody explain this? Or , for that matter, any other things you guys do to new reservoirs before you start using them?

I confess, 'twas I.
When a bedoin brings a camel to the oasis prior to a long trip, the camel can take many minutes to fill himself. But just to make sure that the maximum benefit is achieved, immediately prior to lifting its head - and that is where years of observation and training come in - the camel driver slams two bricks together, with the camel's testicles in between. The camel, reacting in the expected fashion, purses his lips, and takes a violent breath in while still below the water level.
It is much better when told as a joke.
Cheers...Gary
P.S. A good straight man is worth waiting for these days.

So, basically, what your saying is, just before a ride, I should stick my head underwater... nevermind. Anyhow, back to the topic at hand. Any suggestions on what to do to a new reservior?

When I first got mine I just rinsed it out and started using it. Never had a bad taste and as far as I can tell I never suffered any ill effects from chemicals that were left over from manufacturing and as far as I can tell I never suffered any ill effects from chemicals that were left over from manufacturing and as far as I can tell I never suffered any ill effects from chemicals that were left over from manufacturing and as far as I can tell I never suffered any ill effects from chemicals that were left over from manufacturing.

uhm...yea: you could do that, of course. It would alleviate the need for filling the last little bit of the reservoir. And it would also calibrate your pain threshhold for the ensuing ride.
I had asked here, and on the Camelbak Web site, but received no definitive answers (I did get one guess here). Is it possible to use one of these horizontally instead of vertically, as you always see in the examples?
The guess suggested a diaphragm that used the weight of the contents to force water up the tube, therefore requiring a vertical orientation, but I don't see that in any diagrams, etc.

Just rinse it out and fill it up.
Cleaning it is another issue all together. I use baking soda and a little water (enough to form a paste of the baking soda) and then just squish around, rinse and fill it up!
I have left my camelback in my gear bag for a week and it picked up a nasty odor and horrible taste. I used a denture cleaning tablet and it eliminated both!
I have read of people using Mouthwash to rinse it, and even toothpaste.
The best thing to do is to rinse it out immediately after you get home, fill it up 2/3rds of the way and stick it in the freezer. That way, it won't get mold growing in it, and you have an ice cube strapped to your back to help keep you cool. You'll have plenty of water as it melts during your ride, and it's always cold.
BTW, I live in Florida and the water in the tube will get warm fast. After I'm done drinking, I blow the remaining water back into the bladder. This makes you have to suck a little more to get the water to come out, but at least it's cold and not lukewarm (Yuck!)

You forgot the punchline:
Upon witnessing the "supercharging" of the camel an observer asks "Ouch, doesn't that hurt?"
To which the camel handler calmly replies, "Only if you get your thumb caught between the brick."
