Shift problem with Campy 10sp
Hi everyone,
I have 2010 chorus and it shifts fine gear by gear, but if I am low on the cassette and shift all the way up to a larger cog with one big swing of the shifter, it goes up and then drops back down one cog. If I hold the shifter all the way over it stays in the proper gear, when I let go it drops back down one cog. I tried to adjust the cable, but haven't had any luck. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

If you shift 4 at once, it is quite possible to actually shift 4 3/4 gears, so the chain actually shifts 5 cogs, but when you let go, the shifter settles into the 4th click, and thus the chain comes back down to the 4th cog. Shifting 1 at a time is more precise because you are intentionally shifting just 1 click. But sweepeing a large # of cogs, your finger doesn't stop precisely at the 4th click, it can overshoot a bit until you let go.

+1, While the system allows multiple shifts with a single stroke, the stroke isn't long enough to ensure positive completion and engagement of the last gear.
Besides shifting one at a time, you have 2 other options.
1- shift fewer than the max possible, and develop a feel for hitting the last shift on target without overshooting.
2- if looking to shift full range, or all the way to low, use a double-pump technique. Sweep the lever about 1/3-1/2 the way, let it come pack partly and sweep the rest of the way. This extends the available throw, and done quickly and smoothly, is as seamless as a longer single throw.
IMO- it's also easier on the fingers and wrist because it doesn't require as much have movement, so once you're used to it, you'll find yourself using quick multiple short sweeps rather than one long one much of the time.

I have 2005 Chorus 10 and this doesn't happen to me. It will go the number of clicks and stay in that gear. If I overshift it will just fall into place. Maybe you have a weak part internal to the shifter that doesn't catch. Or is it jumping to the next cog without a click? In that case it is just settling in, but that would sound like a cable adjustment is in order. Each click should leave the chain centered on the cog.
I rented an Ultegra equipped bike this past December on Maui to do a ride up Mt. Haleakala, and it drove me crazy that I couldn't multi shift. Plus the lever on Ultegra is reversed from Campy so I was always going the wrong way. I got used to it after a few days but was glad to be back on my Chorus setup when I got home.
