Triple to Double on a Roadie

Is it necessary to upgrade both front brifter and front derailleur?

105 road triple
9 speed

Can't that triple move it without grinding?

With a bit of luck you only need the crankset; the FD may or may not be necessary.

The triple shifter should be fine, except if the extra click is on the tight side and you force it to engage, you could break the shifter. If it works with the extra click on the loose side, I'd do it that way.

Not at all:
1) Remove small ring
2) adjust inner limit screw to avoid chain derailing
3) done

Note: the chainline of a triple's 2 larger rings are further outboard than a Double.

so lower gears are less well aligned..

Even simpler, start at step 2.

Even simpler, just don't shift down. Nothing says you have to use the inner ring.

Yes, but that doesn't matter.
