This is the same stuff American Classic and others sell for tubeless conversions after applying a significant markup.

It has a light silicon adhesive that leaves no residue.

The price is right - about $1.13 a wheel when you buy from amazon and pay $9 shipped for a 36 yard roll, although there are ebay sellers asking $7.50 for two 36 yard rolls shipped which brings the price under $0.50.

For comparison purposes I measured Velox at .020 - .021", Ritchey Snap-On at .019", and Zipp at .018"

Stan's is .055" per layer with two required totaling .011".

Scotch 898 Filament Tape is .0066" with two wraps recommended totaling 0.0132".
What kind of adhesive do you use with that?

"It has a light silicon adhesive that leaves no residue."

It sticks fine as it comes off the roll but is easy to remove

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having the same issues.

Was looking at this.

Stans Rim Tape 10yd x 21mm

Is this the Stan tape that guys are talking about? Could you share a link to the Kapton tape?

That's Stan's tape. Twice as thick as Kapton, over 3X the price.

Here's a 36 yard 19mm wide roll of 1 mil Kapton:

$7.45 on ebay including shipping from LA for 36 yards:

1 Mil Kapton Tape Polyimide 3 4" x 36 yds Free Shipping SHIP from USA | eBay

Use two wraps.

Thanks. Everything that I find that ships to India has absurd shipping rates. So, located some locally, but that is .06mm.

How thick exactly is this 1 'mil'?

Blame the US engineering community for that one. It's common in US machine shops and engineering.

So, if the Indian stuff is .06mm, I need maybe a single wrap? 2 wraps sounds better to me, and I still think it will be much thinner than regular rim tape.

If you look at the detailed specs of the tape Drew linked, while nominally "1 Mil" tape it is actually 2.7 mil thick including the film and the adhesive (0.07mm). So it depends what's being referred to by that 0.06mm measurement on the Indian tape - if total thickness then it's very similar.

Stans tape, two layer for road. Why does anyone use Velox tape? It holds moisture and causes corrosion. Better rims such as Stans, SunRingle and DT have a deep channel and no mounting issues with two layers of Stans.

Well, just got my tape, taped a rim, and left it with 130 psi as a test for a few days.

The A23 rims I got recently had a sticker inside the rim saying the tape had to be <= 0.2mm thick, so two layers of the "1 Mil" tape still makes the grade with room to spare. I have had very good results with the tape that Drew linked.

Deepak... in the future Happy Earth Enterprises LLP ? Biking, Adventure, Wanderlust might be able to help you out. They're a relatively new distributor of our products, and I believe they are carrying our Velotape, or if they aren't, they should be

Are you with Velocity?

I got the rims from Happearth.in. The tape is horrendously expensive, even in the US. In India it will be double. Looking at this Kapton thing as an inexpensive solution. If it works ;-)

They seem to work with tubes, but I wonder if they will work with tubeless?

The Kapton tape is a good alternative, just make sure that you use enough layers for the pressure you're running. It should work well with tubes or tubeless too -- the key is to have a slick tape that is air tight. Kapton should meet both qualifications.
