I probably could have worded my response better. I love going fast on downhills while touring, but didn't reckon the OP would need much more than his current 48/12 (not far from your 46/11) to do that, and figured that getting adequate low gears was a more important consideration. In the end, I think everyone ought to have gearing that makes them happy.

The distinction between Shimano's road and mountain groupsets is a marketing one. In practice, you can mix and match components with no problems.
On my commuter bike, I have a Shimano Tiagra STI set that I run with a MTB 44-34-22 triple crankset and a Shimano mountain Deore rear derailleur with no problems. The rear cassette is a Shimano mega-range 11-34. It can be done.

I've been following this thread with great interest as I'm in the process of trying to convert my 2013 Randonee from bar ends to 105 5703 brifters. Current setup is a LX, 44/32/22 crankset with a LX front derailleur. Rear Cassette is a 11X32. I know I need a 9sp Shimano rear derailleur but didn't know I need a Shimano road front derailleur. Does anyone have any advise as to what the best front derailleur for the 44/32/22 crank would be?
Thanks
Thanks

It looks like the Jtek shiftmate straight may also be an option..
Jtek ShiftMate Straight
I'm starting to think the switch to brifters may be better suited to a winter project rather than a Friday night job as originally intended.
