Campag 8 Speed Hub

Hi All,

My set up is Campag 8 Speed (90's era I think).

I have the opportunity to purchase a complete rear wheel with Campag 9 speed.

Will, this fit in my frame without any modification to the frame ??

Regard

It will fit fine, by the early 90's everything road was (and still is less disc) 130mm inc your Campag rear hub OLD, you will need to research the spline pattern on the freehub, as there have been several different ones for Campag. here are some links to start https://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-me...ing-other.html BikeRadar.com ? View topic - Campagnolo 8 speed cassette on 9/10 speed hub if you are looking to keep your 8 speed cassette

Don't forget that you'll need new shifters, unless you have the little doodad you can swap in the right shifter to take it to 9-speed spacing.

It'll fit your frame (8 speed was the first 130mm OLD standard, 11 speed is still 130mm OLD) but not your cassettes (Campagnolo changed to a deeper spline configuration so they could use lighter alloy freehub bodies).

You can get spacers which allow mounting 8 cogs from a 9 speed cassette.

The wheel will fit your frame, but your shifters will not work with a 9 speed cassette and you can't install an 8 speed cassette on a wheel that accepts 9, 10, or 11 speed cassettes

Are the spacers the ones that come with an 8 spd cassette or, are they special ones?

And, is it a process of simply removing the largest sprocket and replacing it with a spacer?

They're special.

Campagnolo 8 speed uses 1.9mm cogs on 5mm centers implying 3.1mm spacers
Campagonlo 9 speed uses 1.75mm cogs on 4.55mm centers implying 2.8mm spacers

You need 3.25mm spacers to use 8 of 9 cogs.

No.

Yes, as many of the responses indicate, all Campagnolo cassette hubs for the road were & are 130 mm OLN.

An 8s cassette will actually fit the 9s splines but you will need a 2mm spacer behind the last sprocket.

You will also need to make sure that you do take the lockring torque up to the full 40 nm recommended to prevent the sprockets from damaging the splines under load - the original Campag 8s hubs were steel and so tolerated the shallow splines of the 8s cassette sprockets more easily - the alloy bodies had deeper splines to spread the per-sprocket load over a greater surface area - the shallow splines of the 8s sprockets will certainly damage the cassette body unless you tighten the lockring fully.

An alternative may be to track down a legacy part, KIT-03, a spacer kit designed to allow a 9 or 10s cassette made of individual sprockets to be re-spaced to 8s configuration, using the smallest 8 cogs. Campagnolo stopped making this kit in 2009 but there may still be some around at specialist retailers with along history in Campagnolo supply & service.
