chain link query
striping this bike before i offer the frame for sale. made in england, reynolds 21" frame. 3 spd internal hub [archer 1991
just wondering what is the purpose of that clip on the chain link? not a very good pic, hope you can see it ok

usually i'll search for an easy release link before i take a chain off, but this doesn't look like one.
if it is for support, shouldn't all the links have that clip?
also, that nut on the bracket.. holding the chain guard support, is it left or right hand thread?...

and, i want to use the 3 spd internal hub for something else, can it be lubricated with-out pulling it apart?

damn, i'm lousy at taking close-ups...

[edit, oops, wrong pic]

that adjustment lock nut for the cable is hard to loosen, any ideas? i don't want to wreck it, it looks like alloy.
i'm thinking i might need to strip that hub, anyway
along with the spokes, i want it fitted to a 26" alloy wheel

i'm not sure who to believe, wanderer or graphics
wanderer, if i take the clip off, then i suppose the pins are easy to remove with-out using a chain tool?
thx fietsbob

There should be a oil port in the center of the hub where you add the oil , there no need to take the hub apart unless something is broken , if there is parts are easy to get . The clip is where you take the chain apart . The drive side cup is remove clockwise .

Just so you know also when using those when you install make sure closed end is in direction of chain travel.
This is to insure that if the clip catches on something it does not come off.

pulling it apart the way i did mightn't be a waste of time, i might need to add a link or two anyway coz it's going on a larger frame
pretty happy to learn that it is actually an easy release

Use two pliers: one to hold the barrel and the other to loosen the lock ring. Put some grease on the threads before you re-connect so it will be easier next time.
Looks like an AW hub; plenty of parts available for those, should the need arise. The Sun CR-18 rim is available in a 590mm ERD size with 32, 36, or 40 spoke hole drilling and is a drop-in replacement for the original steel rim. If you don't want to re-use the spokes, just measure the old ones and get the same size to use with the CR-18 rim.

i haven't done any measurements yet, i'm hoping the stainless steel spokes and hub will fit this rim..
from an old indi 500 ladies bike. i like the wheel set, the design of the rim.
i've got another wheel set [pictured behind] to fit the indi bike for when i get it ready for sale

an old lady advertised some excercise equipment, a mens and a ladies bike for free on gumtree
the deal was you must take all, i didn't know what i was getting as she was vague on the phone
i was pretty chuffed to discover the mens bike was a 3 spd archer hub, i don't have one of those in my collection
also i can tidy up the indi - turn it over, for about 150 - or there abouts
the old large excercise bike i'm using as a temporary bike stand at the mo, an the other stuff for materials
arh, love it
