Shimano XT Deore shifter cable

The bike is a 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper M4 elite

I just put a new cable and used shifter housing on tonight. Its for the rear gears (right hand shifter).

The shifter seemed too go through the gears fine before I installed it on the bike with the cable. I ran the cable through with no problems and everything looks fine. But I cannot get it to shift gears

This is the first time I have replaced the shifter cable, is there something that I could have done wrong?

First possibility that I would check is whether the cable's lever end was fully in the lever's spool correctly. It's possible to thread the cable though the shift pod but not engage the spool. Andy.

Also make sure that both the derailleur and shifter are in the lowest gear before attaching the cable; this assumes the typical "high-normal" (at rest on the lowest cog) derailleur. Pull the cable lightly and downshift several times to ensure that the shifter has released all of the cable.
