Power Series Cranks on GT Avalanche

I have recently picked up a 1988 GT Avalanche, which was the only MTB to have GT Power Series Cranks. The crank arms are std ones just painted white and had "Power Series" in a different font from the BMX ones, but what is different is the spider that this one takes 3 chain rings,

The issue i am having is that there is adapters that go from a std Square Taper bottom bracket, to the larger square mount of the Power Series Cranks. Has anyone worked with these before? or know best way to get them off?
