Convert coaster brake hub to freewheel ?

I posted this on the folding bikes forum and it was suggested I post here also.

I have a Dahon Boardwalk . It has front V brakes and a coaster brake hub. I want to install rear brakes so I have both front and rear brakes and do away with the coaster brake. Like to able to pedal backwards freely when it is standing still so I can orient the pedals where I want before taking off. (freewheel) Is there away to modify the coaster hub and do away with the brake so it can turn freely backwards ? I imagine I could get a new 20" wheel with the hub I want but don't want to go to this extreme.

Yes, and no. You can disable the brake, and there even used to be a kit marketed for the purpose. It's a very easy job.

That's the good news. The bad news is that you still can't backpedal more than about half a turn. The bendix clutch at the heart of the system isn't like a freewheel, and you only have limited movement before running to the end of the helix. So it's still like a coaster brake, except that nothing happens when you push back.

About half a turn backwards would be an OK compromise. Now to find out how to do the mod.

thanks FB,

Bob

Here's one video. I haven't watched it, but it's one of many. Watch a few and you'll have a good sense of the job.

Have fun.

Tried modifying the hub after watching the you tube video. Easy peasy, and works great !
I can back peddle about half a turn as you said. Perfect for my needs.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
