I just read through this old thread and thought I'd see if any of you are still having fun on your bikes. I'm 52 and thinking about a BMXer for old times sake. I was racing a tricked out DB Viper way back in about '86 haha.

You're only too old to BMX if your head tells you and you believe it. "Too old to rock and roll, too young to die??

mid level parts but still put some different things on it. It keeps on changing. It’s a hoot to learn a new riding style and roll to locations I usually arrive on a road bike.

2 more BMX rescues I am working on.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c708746e6.jpeg
2001 DB Venom abused, spray bombed but original except the wheels. Free from a trash run trailer.

Full cro-no frame and fork.

2008 Felt Fuse. Cheap from a pawn shop. Spray bombed but complete. Nice frame and good components.

Removing the paint finds Cro-Mo stickers on the forks, handle bar and frame.

Had a great time throwing my BMX around at Surf City, NC.

That’s a good looking machine! It looks like it will handle both styles of riding very well.

3speedslow 05-16-23 07:32 AM

Straight bladed forks fit perfectly in with both cruiser and BMX🙂

3speedslow 05-16-23 10:02 AM

Trying a more race orientated handle bar. Still with the 4 bar look I prefer.

Never too old to ride!! :) Riding keeps you young. If it's got two wheels, keep riding till you can't ride anymore :)

3speedslow 05-17-23 06:43 PM

Well,

im 63 and been riding all my life. Retired now but doing the bike messenger thing.

Love all types of riding. What do you ride?

Juan Foote 05-22-23 12:44 PM

One of our friends sister and husband race in the masters division, they are both 52/3. The wife had a pretty bad accident last year and broke some stuff. She thought she was going to be done, but the bug got her again when she recovered. They are riding bikes with the 24" wheels.

I mostly just rode them and hooned around as a younger adult, did some racing and whole lot of jumping things. I owned so many bikes it is hard to recall all of them. CW, Cycle Craft, Redline, Mongoose, Haro...my favorite was the team edition Patterson I came across. They were super rare and very sturdy. I broke more than one frame in my day and that bike was a tank. It got stolen from out front of a store while I was inside. The school badass stole it, I knew it, and didn't want to confront him or call the police...he was a vicious ****. I later found out that Boss was being welded by one of the guys previously involved in Patterson and picked one of those up. It was a bit longer in the front and the wheelbase made for a bike that handled super well on the ground and in the air.

Rats! Double RATS!

I missed my window for BMX, Mountain Biking, Skate Boarding, and Free Climbing.

rats, Rats, RATS!

Not that I could not try it... But the recovery would be quite long...

3speedslow 05-23-23 06:25 PM

Yes, the recovery would be long. That’s why my favorite trick is “not hurting myself” while I try things!

Got a super freebie yesterday from a scraper, a 79 ACS Z Mag front wheel. Cleaned up now with fresh grease. Spins great!

I plan on mounting it on my Donk and rolling around to see what it feels like. I wonder about the straight sides being able to hold the modern tire I will have on it.

before as found

3speedslow 05-25-23 11:52 AM

Mounted the mag wheel. Rolling around with no problems with tire not holding on. Have not been super aggressive with it though. 40 psi seems a good number for it.

When I got it, it seems to have had a blow out. I think someone tri d a much higher psi then was wise.

2003 Mongoose pulled from the trash pile. Not sure if it’s fate but not gonna go to the dump.

Progress so far: seatpost is a stuck mo fo! I will win in the end. Rims are straight and dent free. Hubs can be saved with a good clean out and lube.
brake levers are interesting. The right one is a double cable. Since I’m ditching the gyro, I will see if I can actuate both brakes with the same lever.
brakes are C Star and Dia Compe copies.
headset is in good condition except for the top dust cap. Make is Ahead.
bars are a little rusty but cro-no. Stem is a hinged model. Not sure I trust it to clamp tight enough now.
BB was well greased and the crank arms stout.
pedals will need rebuilding. Chain is toast. Seat is gone. Tires are rotten.

Having fun with it though.

Edit: seatpost is out!

3speedslow 06-13-23 07:22 AM

Must be raining Mongooses!

earlier I got a 2004 MG Optic. Then Saturday I was on my way home from a grocery ride. I passed a Mongoose Brawler laying out by the curb. Homeowner said take it you want it. So I walked my bike and this new one the rest of the way home.

Sunday my neighbor who scraps walked another BMX to my driveway. I stripped that for good parts and gave him the frame back.

Not for tricks but to ride fast on.

I've never ridden a BMX bike. Are they good for general riding around the neighbourhood? eg. just cruising for about an hour at a Senior's pace
I like the way they look and how compact vs a standard Cruiser.

3speedslow 06-25-23 05:55 PM

They are a different sort of riding style than a traditional cruiser. That said, I take mine around my large neighborhood for rather spirited rides. Mostly standing up.

You can have the seat up a little higher like they did back in the 70’s-80’s but you will not get the good leg extension like on a cruiser. My knees don’t mind sit riding with a layback seat post.

Got back from a beach weekend with my BMX. Perfect get around bike for crowded areas and car traffic. Gets a lot of comments!

have to say I killed my cheap freewheel with all the hard riding I’ve been doing. Final straw… going up an down the big bridge over the I Coastal Waterway couple times a day. Made it through the weekend but time for another 14T FW!

The raised seat/layback seat post set up looks ok for casual cruising.
I'd imagine getting a BMX with 26" wheels (or larger) might add to the experience(?)

A 26” is the same size as a cruiser model so yes, very much like it. Plus you get the BMX set up.

3speedslow 06-26-23 08:30 AM

Before I left for the beach I received my new mag wheels from Planet BMX. They had a great sale on Black mags which are my favorite. To my door at 140$.

These new ones have sealed per. bearings too.
